OUR FRUIT - Lemon (citrus limon)
Lemon is thought to originate from the Himalayas, and more specifically from Kashmir. Introduced in China 3000 years ago, its growing area developed slowly. The lemon tree was introduced on our side of the Mediterranean by Arabs around the year 1000.
Lemon trees can be found in any Mediterranean garden, and their fruit has its place in gastronomy and traditional medicine alike. Lemon is indeed recognized as a health food.
Its excellent keeping quality, combined with its richness in vitamin C, led to the eradication of scurvy in the 15th century. This disease, linked to a vitamin-C deficiency, decimated crewmembers during foreign voyages. The solution was to simply improve the diet of sailors.
Lemon is used as a condiment. It accompanies drinks (fruit juice, tea, herbal tea), salty dishes (salads, vegetables, fish, meat) and pastries and can be used in slices or freshly-squeezed juice, as well as in candied form or salted.
Its antioxidant properties are used for cooking : lemon juice keeps artichokes, avocados and fresh peeled fruit from darkening.
It's a natural cure for fatigue and a detoxifying agent; it increases the body's defences, like any vitamin C-rich fruit. It should be taken on an empty stomach in the morning, perhaps diluted in water with a hint of honey.
The essential oil found in the peel also has excellent antiseptic properties.

Corsican lemon, recognizable by its rough and fragrant skin, is characterized by juicy pulp and few seeds. It yields a good amount of juice.
Its distinctive aroma is one of the reasons why we chose it.
The Eureka variety, planted in Corsica, is a four-season lemon that produces several flowerings every year. It originates from California, where it was identified for the first time in 1858.
Lemons from the first flowerings reach maturity in November and are harvested as soon as their skin begins to have its distinctive yellow colour (November-December).
Lemons can be preserved for a very long time on the tree. Consequently, in a family garden, a single lemon tree can supply the kitchen year-round as needed.
limea's lemon tree orchards are located on the coastal plain of Aleria, East of Corsica.
Lemon trees are cultivated in accordance with the rules of organic agriculture : organic fertilization, soil care by grass grinding and water irrigation from the Corsican mountains. Since our agricultural methods respect the environment and the health of consumers, without synthetic fertilizers and pesticides, untreated and un-waxed after harvesting, you can also enjoy the zest of our lemons.
